The State Theatre, in association with the Southern African Theatre Initiative (SATI); Junxion Arts; and Jaziel Music, presents
Tap Roots, written and directed by Sello Maake ka-Ncube and featuring the cream of South Africa’s creative talent. Following its preview season at the Windybrow Theatre in July, Tap Roots opens at the State Theatre in Pretoria on 23 September, and runs until 17 October.
Featuring a large cast that includes Desmond Dube; Mfana Jones Hlope; Thabo Seabi; Tladi Moletsane; Peter Mashigo; Amos Ketlele; and Sibulele Gcilitshana,
Tap Roots is an engaging cross-cultural musical extravaganza with tap dancing at its heart.

This part fictionalised exuberant musical fiesta is inspired by the involvement / participation of Janet Hampton-Carpede (who also stars in the production), a South African singer and dancer who toured the world with Ipi Tombi before settling in the USA.
With original music by the
SAMA-winning duo, Jaziel Brothers, and a dynamic company of musicians,
Tap Roots features scintillating choreography by
Standard Bank Young Artist winner, Thabo Rapoo.
Ka-Ncube boldly marries the golden, romantic heyday of dance with South Africa’s 'born free' hip-hop generation through tap dance.
The musical tells of Zinzi, a young girl who aspires to be a professional dancer. As she and her hip-hop dance crew prepare to perform at an international dance competition, they are introduced to tap dancing by Zinzi’s uncle, the legendary Lolly Kat (Thunder Feet). Thus unfolds a fascinating tale of family secrets and buried histories, told through a vibrant palette of music and dance.
Set design is by Nduka Mtambo, with lighting by Nomvula Molepo and costumes by Nthati Matshidiso. The show is produced by Mpho Molepo, who heads up SATI.
Don’t miss one of the most uplifting homegrown musical experiences of the year – you won’t be able to resist tapping your feet to the infectious
Tap Roots beat!
The show runs from Tuesdays to Sundays, and tickets cost R57 and can be booked at Computicket. For group bookings of 10 or more, call Sibongile Mabena at 012 392 4000.
