It’s been almost two months since sister publication to People magazine, Mense, was launched. The Afrikaans title has been treating the ever-growing Afrikaans-speaking market to the indispensable snippets of essential celebrity gossip. The magazine, a title in the Caxton Publishing stable, is aimed at women aged 16 to 35, and is already selling between 25 000 and 30 000 copies a week, with a still-growing circulation. Even though 85% of Mense’s content is directly translated from People, the weekly sales of People magazine remains at a strong 116 000 copies. Mense’s assistant editor, Chantal Marais says, “I love this country, but there are many things that get people down. That’s why we like to give them a smile…you know, like laughing at the stupid dress Paris is wearing and so on”.
