Clive Sithole's Ukuphuca
Media 192
Ukuphuca, curated Nomusa Mtshali, is a solo exhibition of ceramics and paintings by Clive Sithole at the BAT Centre Menzi Mchunu Gallery. The exhibition opens at 18:00, and runs from 9 February until 11 March.
From moulding award winning ceramics to painting edgy conceptual paintings, Sithole’s solo exhibition is titled Ukuphuca which means 'to scrape off' or 'to take out'. This word is also used when one is shaving, bringing irony to his concept.
Combining ceramics and painting, Sithole expresses anarchic identity within a society predisposed by hybridity. His solo exhibition questions particularly black women in a modern society and their perception of beauty. Sithole believes that the perception of beauty leaves black women in a vacuum in which they lack self-pride instated they create the mask which is appropriate to the perception of beauty.
