A unique online exercise programme, launched by Shape magazine last year, drew such an incredible response (2 521 readers signed up - 636 readers in the first 24 hours) that it is being run again this year. The Shape 10km Challenge is aimed at beginners who’d like to run 10km but are currently at zero fitness. This gentle online programme will take this person from zero to 10km hero in just 12 weeks. The online programme is designed by sports scientist Kathy Mc Quaide from the Sports Science Institute of South Africa (SSISA). The 12 week step-by-step running programme includes three run or walk sessions per week, weekly e-newsletters with nutritional advice, encouraging tips, information on 10km races in each region and a chat forum where readers can share their training experiences and get advice from the wellness experts at Shape. Readers can register free at www.shapemag.co.za and the programme will start with the first welcome letter on 29 January. Shape’s aim is to gently guide readers through the process of training for the 10km race and at the end of each programme Shape will source regional races where participants can enter a 10km race. Elsa Carpenter Frank, publisher of Shape magazine says, “The overwhelmingly positive response to our 2006 challenge took us completely by surprise. It made us realise that there was a huge gap in the market for a programme geared to women who wanted to start running. Our 10km challenge offers the non-runner the easiest, most non-threatening way to get started. Our online forum also offers the participants a great way to link up and compare notes, find running mates in their area, and to ask the experts questions. We expect the next 10km challenge to be even more successful than our first”. Visit to www.shapemag.co.za for registration and further details.
