Special Assignment looks at Ukutwala

In 2008, Special Assignment visited the Eastern Cape to bring you a report on the practice of Ukutwala – an age old custom where young girls are abducted and forced into marriage.
Late last year our team travelled back to the Eastern Cape and visited the Palmerton Care Centre. The centre nestled between the rolling hills of the Eastern Cape landscape has become home for many young girls who have escaped these marriages to find refuge and solace.
In this report we hear from young girls who have suffered untold horror as this custom is still being enforced amongst the Mpondo People of rural Eastern Cape. Ancient custom and modernity come face to face as these girls leave behind an unspeakable past and find comfort in education and a better future.
