The map is sponsored annually by leading map provider MapIT and displays the 56km ultra and 21km half marathon against an overlay of the route onto a detailed street map of Cape Town and surroundings. This allows users to access relevant information to assist with pre-race planning or calculate the best route to avoid road closures.
“The exceptional functionality and degree of interactivity of the event map is unprecedented in South Africa,” explained Etienne Louw, managing director of MapIT. “We’re proud to continue our traditional support of this famous event and we anticipate that this will become an invaluable tool in future events of this kind.”
Users can find the map at
www.twooceansmarathon.org.za. Once on the site, click on ‘event information’ and then click on ‘ultra marathon’ or ‘half marathon’ icons. Look for `route’ along the top tabs and clicking this will call up information and a map on the main page. Scroll down the page and look for the sub-heading `interactive map’ and `click here’. Once clicked, this will take visitors to the interactive map hosted by MapIT.
With the interactive map loaded, visitors can see the two different routes, the ultra and the half marathon, as well as the refreshments stations or medical stations. Dragging the mouse along the map will allow the user to follow the route, while clicking on the + and – allows them to zoom in to get more detail.
“The organisation and execution of the event is a complex, logistical challenge that affects competitors, support crews, spectators and residents,” said marketing manager for the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon, Stefanie Schultzen.
“The graphic display of the route at street level detail and the accompanying list of support points answer questions about the most important aspects of the race – our support for the runners along the route.”
