New Media Publishing took Mark Shuttleworth’s Hip2b2 magazine distribution from 426 schools in 3 provinces to 720 schools in 9 provinces, after taking over the reins as publisher for the title. According to Creative Director Crispian Brown, “We also re-engineered the design and content to make Hip2b2 the smartest youth magazine on the planet”. The magazine has a circulation of 80 000 and a readership of more than 500 000 learners, said publisher Helena Gavera, who added, “Our readers are the smartest young people in South Africa: tomorrow’s doctors, scientists, captains of industry, Nobel laureates and aeronauts”. Mark Shuttleworth launched the Hip2b2 brand five years ago with the aim of making subjects such as science, maths and technology more interesting to learners in high school. The title is distributed free to schools across the spectrum and appeals to diverse cultures that are intellectually similar. The title’s September “Music” issue traces “the evolution of music technology”, and looks at the maths in forensic investigations. Gavera concludes that “Demand for the publication from schools is growing” and “in some instances teachers are making colour copies so that more issues can be handed out. It’s very exciting”.
