Enlivened by the recent successes of live local stand-up comedy, popular actor and rising comedy star Siyabonga Radebe brings to life his much anticipated one-man stand-up comedy show – Smiles and Cries. It will run at the Market Theatre from 24 November to 4 December and is bound to allow audiences to see Siya like they have never seen him before.

Smiles and Cries is about the trials and tribulations of a young township boy from KwaZulu Natal and his journey to the bright lights of stardom in the city of gold – the highs and the lows, the pain and the joy… the smiles and the cries that have moulded him to be the man he is today.

It’s a quintessential South African coming of age story told by one of the fastest rising stars of comedy in this country. It will be entertaining comedy show that will cover everything from family dynamics, culture, race issues, relationships, peer pressure, violence, discrimination, tradition and religion in a comedic story about the quest to achieve the South African dream.

With a great motivational undertone to it, this show will not only seek to entertain but it will also look to inspire the audience, evoke laughter and tears… smiles and cries. The inclusion of a live band will serve to add another dimension to the narrative of the story and without giving too much away, audiences are definitely in for a treat.

Siyabonga Brian Radebe aka “Siya B” is widely recognized for his acting achievements on both the world of television as well as the movies. On the small screen, he has held down lead roles in television shows such as SABC 1’s A Place Called Home, Intersections, Home Affairs and more famously on e.tv’s prime time soapie Rhythm City.

His talent has also seen him get numerous theatre acting roles as well as movie appearances of which his role in Hollywood blockbuster District 9 earned him the most rave reviews. This multi-talented performer is also a great singer musician with a fully-fledged album in the pipeline.

However, unbeknown to many – stand-up comedy is where his passion really lies. Siya is now taking the comedy industry by storm and his rise in the ranks has been nothing short of meteoric. His acting ability has allowed him to develop a unique character-driven comedy style that has enthralled audiences the country over.
