Charlize Theron, South Africa’s very own mega-movie actress, will soon be seen in the role of the Evil Queen in her forthcoming film,
Snow White and the Huntsman. She has also admitted in an interview with
Vogue that at school she was ‘obsessed’ with a boy called Johan Botha, who is now a Johannesburg-based artist.
Botha also just happens to be the brother of acclaimed director, performer and producer, Pieter Bosch Botha, who is currently presenting the Cape Town premiere of Dianne Simpson’s
Rose Red, the Snow White story as seen from the perspective of none other than the Evil Queen.
In the interview with
Vogue, Theron says: “There was a school dance coming up, and I told my mom I needed a dress, and I bought this amazing crushed-velvet burgundy dress—long-sleeved, off-the-shoulder, at Woolworths. And then Thursday came, and Friday came, and he [Botha] did not ask me to the dance. And I had to call my mom to come get me.”
Botha is quoted in the article as responding “If you interview her again, you may tell her that the crush was definitely mutual, for what it’s worth.”
“It’s touching to know that Theron had a crush on my brother. Little did she know he later created an incredible painting of her,” says Bosch Botha. ‘Well, I believe she is now single so you never know what might happen,” he adds.
Part of a theatrical dynasty, Bosch Botha is the son of acclaimed actors At Botha and Annelise Bosch. Creator of the critically acclaimed
HATS which sold out at last year's
National Arts Festival and the recent
Out the Box Festival in Cape Town, Bosch Botha has enjoyed an illustrious career spanning television and theatre as a director, producer, performer and musical theatre/cabaret artist.
He is currently producing and directing the Cape Town premiere of
Rose Red at Kalk Bay Theatre, which is written and performed by accomplished actress and musical theatre performer, Dianne Simpson. The comedy-drama-cabaret tells the
Snow White story from the Evil Queen’s perspective, cleverly woven together with great popular songs from the likes of Tori Amos, Annie Lennox, Brandi Carlile and Lady Gaga. Musical director, Dawid Boverhoff, also accompanies Simpson on stage.
“I am looking forward to seeing the new movie, and while I have no doubt that Theron will be superb in the role of the Evil Queen, it will be hard to beat Dianne’s performance which has been described as ‘faultless’, ‘powerful’ and ‘Simpson's Queen has got more edge’,” Bosch Botha smiles.
There are only twelve shows left for the run of
Rose Red. It will be performed Wednesday to Saturday at Kalk Bay Theatre until 10 December at 20:30.
Don’t miss the great mid-week special on Wednesday and Thursday when tickets are two for the price of one (R115). Tickets to other shows cost R115.
