When We Were Black
Media 143
A new local mini-series will be starting on SABC1 on Thursday, 21 December. When We Were Black is produced by Born Free Media and directed by Khalo Matabane, who is also the brains behind Story of a Beautiful Country, Young Lions and Conversations on a Sunday Afternoon.
The series plays off in Soweto, 1976. It follows the story of Fistos (Matli Mohapeloa), an intelligent but shy teenager who meets Mangi (Lali Dangazele), the girl of his dreams. She is the daughter of a local liberation preacher, and the on-off girlfriend of Modise, a rising star in the world of student politics.
Fistos is smitten, and being the target of the school gang doesn't help either. Now, not only must he confront these bullies, but he must cloak his sexual desires and learn the art of seduction within a revolutionary context.
When We Were Black was commissioned by SABC Drama as part of its 1976 strand. There is a guest appearance by Presley Chweneyagae as he recites a historical poem by Ingoapele Madingoane.
Don't miss the first installment of this four part mini-series on Thursday, 21 December at 21:00.
