The season is called the ‘Fees van die Uitverkooptes’. The five productions, featuring some of the blue-bloods in Afrikaans theatre and some up-and-coming stars, are Buitepos, Ont, Ou Blare, N is vir Neurose and Nag Ma.
Ont, Wessel Pretorius’ one man show that was crowned top drama production at this year’s Woordfees festival, is yet another hit on the programme. It is about the journey towards adulthood, a study in the relationship of family members as well as a celebration of the joys of freedom and flight. There are four performances on 16 and 22 May at 19:00 and on 19 and 26 May at 20:15.
Marsha Norman’s Pulitzer prize-winning play Night, Mother, translated and adapted as Nag, Ma by Antoinette Louw and Sandra Prinsloo, explores the complex relationship between a mother and a daughter. There are three performances only on 25 May at 20:15 and 26 May at 10:00 and 15:00.
Rachelle Greeff’s second play, Buitepos, directed by Fred Abrahamse, features Skoonheid star Deon Lotz with Deirdre Wolhuter and Jill Middlekop. Lotz portrays an everyday guy with time on his hands and ghosts from the past on his heels who finds himself on a dry river bed outside the Karoo town of Buitepos with only his thoughts, memories and the rocks around him as company. Performances are on 14, 15 and 23 May at 19:00.
Theatre and television veterans Elsabe Daneel, Susanne Beyers and Joanie Combrink bring humour to the stage in Leon Kruger’s Ou Blare, a family comedy which sees masks dropping to the floor and issues of middle-aged women coming to the fore. The two performances are on 17 May at 19:00 and 18 at May 20:15.
The Fees van die Uitverkooptes season also takes place the Klein Libertas Theatre in Stellenbosch from 14 May to 28 June
