DJ Fresh and South Africa's first black female tattoo artist, Ethel Laka are to bare all in City Press i Magazine, which will appear in the newspaper on Sunday 16 September. Fresh, who displays his tattoos proudly on the cover alongside Laka, talks about getting inked and how once is never enough.
According to Fresh, he got his first tattoo – a panther - in 1998 and hasn’t stopped since.
Laka, who has been a tattoo artist for 10 years, says she has seen the industry transform over the years and is very excited to be part of South African tattoo culture. ‘When I started out, it was challenging because some clients didn’t want a black woman doing their tattoos. I didn’t fit their expectations of what a tattooist looks like,’ she says.
The latest issue also features Bollywood actress Tarina Patel and CNN’s Inside Africa reporter Errol Barnett. i Magazine also previews extracts from a new book - What would you say to your 16-year-old self? - featuring letters from Nkhensani Nkosi, Loyiso Bala and Noeleen Maholwana-Sangqu written to themselves as awkward teenagers.
Leading content marketer New Media recently took City Press lifestyle magazine supplement ‘i’ national after a successful seven-month pilot period in the Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal markets, increasing its current print run from 115 000 to the full run of 230 000 copies. ‘i’ is the first weekly for the content marketer, and New Media has taken quickly to the medium.
