The finalists in 2013’s House of the Year are:
-House 1: Modern Poetry. Soulful interiors and expanses of green add an appealing soft touch to this striking, contemporary home in Joburg. Owners: Marcus Pieterse and Lee-Ann Bell. Architect: Pierre Swanepoel;
- House 2: Little Luxuries. A classic, compact apartment in Johannesburg has enough room for its owner’s collectables. Owner: Astrid van der Heim. Interior Design: Van der Heim Interiors International;
- House 3: High Style. Contemporary artworks, chic furnishings and eclectic objets are equally at home in this cliff-hugging Atlantic Seaboard apartment. Owners: Robert Sherwood and Alberto Rodriguez. Interior Design: Robert Sherwood Design;
- House 4: Go with the Flow. A voluminous contemporary home in Joburg’s Houghton blends seamlessly with its leafy surrounds. Owners: Xavier and Carine Huyberechts. Architect: Xavier Huyberechts, GLH & Associates Architects;
- House 5: Natural Perspective. An intimate cluster of eco homes on the Hermanus coastline balances sleek modernity with warm, organic touches. Architect: Gardiol Bergenthuin, Bergenthuin Argitekte, Mareli Dreyer (project management, interiors);
- House 6: Second Nature. A stylishly renovated holiday retreat on the Garden Route is at one with it pristine surrounds. Architect: Nieuwoudt Architects;
- House 7: Barefoot Luxury. A knockout architectural beach retreat in Hermanus is all about laid-back living in style. Architect and Interior Design: Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects. Interiors: Antoni Associates;
- House 8: Double Take. This elegantly updated Edwardian mansion in Cape Town’s leafy suburbs is complemented by a modern entertainment pavilion. Owners: Garth and Nina Holmes. Architect: Bert Pepler Architects;
- House 9: A Clean Start. A passion for contemporary architecture and the needs of a growing family informed the design of a modern marvel set on the slopes above Cape Town. Owners: Craig and Colleen Sutherland. Architect: Stefan Antoni Olmesdahl Truen Architects;
- House 10: Natural Anthem. In harmony with its sylvan surrounds, a modernist pavilion in Joburg’s Westcliffe is the ultimate summer retreat. Architect: GASS Architecture Studios; and
- House 11: Away From It All. A spirited weekend getaway in a Western Cape conservation area balances family-friendly comfort with vibrant style. Owners: Mark and Ingrid Corbett. Interior Design: Mark and Ingrid Corbett.
