The majority of South Africa's youth follow populist cultures but there are those who stand out, are grounded and comfortable in non-mainstream cultures and art-forms; the ones who choose the route less travelled. These youth are not weird; they are independent and ooze a sense of free thinking and confidence, they are 100% youth.
Over four weeks every Sunday at 18:30 starting on 11 August, SABC1 viewers can watch colourful storytelling that promises to spark discussions in South Africa.
Sane Zondi, assistant commission editor at SABC Education, says, “100% Youth is a factual series that profiles four young South Africans involved in non-mainstream art-forms. These young people are confident, talented and have conviction in their choice of the less chosen, less popular art-forms. They don’t crump, beatbox or twerk, but they are just as captivating and relevant.”
The 100% Youth characters own their space and are unapologetic about it. They are down to earth, yet head strong; they are 100% Youth.
Leonard, a male ‘Xibelani’ dancer performs and upstages most women in a genre originally created for females only. Lerato, a female ‘Gumboot’ dancer belongs to a male-dominated sphere and goes through equal amounts of rigorous physical challenging practice. Buhle, a young male ‘Famo’ artist is in a very mature space and owns it like it is his. Zinhle, an adorable female sangoma, composes and teaches initiates the ‘Sangoma’ world of music and dance.
Each episode shares the person’s background, how they found the art-form and developed a relationship with it.
100% Youth will be broadcast from Sunday, 11 August at 18:30 on SABC1.
