The 2014 event, themed ‘Up where they belong’, promises to be even bigger and better with a range of activities and entertainment; from ex-war birds showcasing South Africa’s rich aviation heritage, to an Anti-Rhino Poaching demonstration, a pyrotechnic display by the SA Army Engineer Formation, vendors and food stalls and hundreds of aviation exhibitors.
South Africa’s favourite aircrafts, including all-time classics such as the Gripen, Hawk, Mirage, Cheetah and Silver Falcons, will fly high and provide beautiful visual displays. Special appearances include the AN2 – a unique Russian plane from the Cold War in 1950 and the P51D, a World War 2 Mustang made by North American and one of the most famous fighter and Bomber Escort planes which dates back to 1940.
For the little ones there will be kiddies entertainment and for the folks, a social beer garden with spectacular views of the aircrafts. Flying schools from across the country will also be on display to provide further information to curious and inquisitive guests interested in aviation. In addition to this, the South African Air Force Museum will host an
Aviation Career Expo on Friday, 9 May for thousands of scholars interested in pursuing a career in aviation.
“We encourage everyone to join us at Zwartkop. It’s a great day for the family and a fantastic learning experience. This is a great time for us to be proud of our rich aviation history and to be excited about future opportunities available to us. Exciting developments include AHRLAC (Advanced High-Performance Reconnaissance Light Aircraft), a revolutionary South African-designed and developed aircraft, destined for a wide range of civilian and military tasks around the world. Local developments in aviation deserve to be recognised, and the South African Air Force Show helps us do exactly that. Throughout our challenging history, Africans have developed a reputation for resilience and innovation,” adds John Craig, CEO of Paramount Group.
“The Paramount Group South African Air Force Museum show is not just about flying but also about exploring and celebrating the history, beauty, and the engineering and design advancements that we see within our country’s aerospace industry,” he adds.
The event will begin at 09:30 with gates opening at 06:00. Tickets can be purchased at the entry gate or at the SAAF Museum for R50 per person. Children under the age of 12 will get in for free. Parking areas include the area in the vicinity of the Bays Hill Memorial on Trichardt Road and the area north of Trichardt road opposite AFB Zwartkop. Further secure parking is also available in the old ‘SAAF Gymnasium’ at R20 per vehicle. The Gautrain will provide services on the show day to Centurion station - from there the Gautrain bus service will operate to deliver air show spectators to the base.
