Heart 104.9FM ropes in celebrities as Suga goes on maternity leave

What does one do when the host of the city’s biggest commercial radio show suddenly goes on maternity leave? That’s the dilemma faced by Heart 104.9FM when Suga, their afternoon Drive 326 show host, announced that she’d be off air from July until September.
Given the station’s positioning as “The Heart Family” – there was no question of doing anything but the best to support Suga as she added to that family. Their solution was to rope in a stellar cast of celebrities and put them behind the mic.
It might sound like a simple and elegant solution, except that many of the actors, comedians and singers that they’ve lined up have no experience of being on that side of the mixing desk. While fun and mayhem are guaranteed with such a diverse collection of personalities, the potential for technical chaos is just as big. That’s where Suga’s co-hosts, the outspokenly grumpy skeptic Nick Feinberg, and the sweet, trusting Keri Miller will come into play. Handling the sport and traffic respectively, they’ll have their work cut out keeping the celebrities on track with the kind of listener interactions and content that have seen Drive 326 become the massive success that it is.
The celebrity guest hosts are instantly recognisable names:
Alistair Izobell. This veteran performer has wowed audiences across the globe with his command of the stage and complete understanding of his craft. Izobell’s performance career began when he was just five years old and has seen him receive a Sir Laurence Olivier Award – British theatre’s most sought after award and considered a mark of theatrical greatness.
Bongani Njoli. He is best known for his unique voice on e.tv. This 42-year-old Capetonian’s voice has become synonymous with the channel, having worked at the station for the past 11 years. Njoli graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from UCT and listeners will recognise his voice from the many programmes he advertises.
Dmitri Jegels. His full name is Dmitri Garcia Aloysius Jegels. He is a father, brother, lifelong student, radio announcer, entrepreneur, media consultant, language practitioner, patron of the arts, klawerjas player, errant poet and is currently studying for his PHD in linguistics at UWC.
Chester Missing. He is a political wonk, sharp social commentator, relentless interviewer of people who try to get away from him and the world's most revolutionary puppet. Missing has become one of the country’s toughest political analysts, gets away with it and spells out in inimitable puppet fashion, the must-knows, the who’s who and the what-what.
Kurt Schoonraad. Mad, zany, lively and manic are among the many words that are used to describe Schoonraad. Hailing from Mitchell's Plain, he is Cape Town's favourite comedian and his earthy humour makes him a real South African boykie in every way. He is also an established actor in the South African television and movie industry. Schoonraad pioneered Jou Ma se Comedy Club, the only dedicated comedy club in the Western Cape which is situated in the iconic Pumphouse at the V&A Waterfront.
Terence Bridgett. Born and bred in Cape Town, Bridgett began his schooling at the Drakensberg Boys Choir School, matriculated at SACS and graduated from UCT Drama School with a BA Performers Diploma in Speech and Drama and a Fleur du Cap nomination for Most Promising Student. He is now an established TV, Theatre and Movie star and throughout the course of his illustrious career, he has been honored with a few nominations and even an award or two. Believe it or not, but they are all exhibited in the vicinity of his fridge.
Stuart Taylor. Taylor is probably best known to South Africans as the presenter of SABC3’s hit travel show, Going Nowhere Slowly. But when this Stellenbosch University science graduate is not in front of the camera with mud-powdered face and wind-styled hair, he is enchanting local and international audiences with his headline, stand-up comedy and magic shows.
Chad Saaiman. Talented singer/songwriter, recording artist and model, Saaiman has been performing professionally for over a decade and has graced stages around the world with his music. Having graduated from the University of the Western Cape with a B.A. Degree in English Literature and Communications, he is a prolific songwriter who has penned radio singles for some of South Africa’s biggest artists. His star continues to rise on the South African music scene and he continues to win over a multitude of fans, with chart-topping singles.
Heart 104.9FM remains firmly rooted in the Western Cape with a diverse listener base who all listen and enjoy their unique mix of entertainment, news and music. And they aim to continue to bring their listeneres the best of Cape Town’s beat.
