He was responsible for driving the transformation process of the company into a modern, vibrant, multi-cultural institution.

“I have achieved the goals that I had set out for the growth of Artscape. The institution is now on a strong footing and it is time to introduce new blood to take Artscape forward,” says Maas.

At the end of 2012, Artscape announced a multi-million rand plan to revamp the 43-year-old complex into a comprehensive cultural facility with a distinctive African persona.

During his tenure, Maas oversaw the unbundling of an organisation with more than 800 personnel into an efficient streamlined company with less than 100 permanent staff.

Artscape has become known for the varied arts productions encompassing all genres, which make up its annual performing arts programme. In addition, it has developed programmes committed to training, the exploration of new South African works, development and education, rural outreach and schools’ programmes, to ensure that future generations continue to grow and nurture the country’s diverse cultural heritage.

“It is not always easy to leave something close to your heart, but I will ensure a smooth transition to the new CEO still to be appointed by the Council. I wish to thank the board, staff and patrons of Artscape for their tremendous support over the past 18 years. The institution has what it takes to step boldly into the future,” he says.

“The Artscape council acknowledges and appreciates Mr Michael Maas’s long service as Artscape CEO and his role in steering the entity from its transition from CAPAB. This transition and organisational realignment has made it possible to have a high performing, effective organisation that is poised to undergo further fundamental transformation,” says Dr Somadoda Fikeni, chairperson of the Artscape council.

“We also appreciate the fact that Mr Maas is passing the baton after having made his mark, a sign of a foresighted leader who places the interest of the organisation higher than those of himself. I would like to wish him all the best in his future assignments,” adds Dr Fikeni.
