Jamali member, Jacqui Carpede, has gone solo. The pop star’s new album Ready to Love is already out with the single Buya receiving local airplay. Carpede says she still has a great relationship with the other members of Jamali, who rose to fame in 2004 after placing second in the SABC1 reality show Coca Cola Popstars.
Media Update caught up with Carpede to find out more.
How is your solo career going compared to working as part of the Jamali trio?
I'm enjoying the freedom of being a solo artist, I can try different things. One thing I miss about being in a group is not feeling so lonely on stage.
What are the biggest differences?
More responsibility, more control and more independence.
How has the response to your new album been?
I'm very happy with the response and support I’ve received, especially from my fans.
How would you describe the album to someone who hasn’t heard it?
My album is all things dance. There are elements of house, funk and electro. I think that people will relate to what I sing about especially if they've been in love before.
What is your favourite thing about the South African music scene?
I would like my favourite thing to be that we heard more local content and even more different content on radio and TV. Variety makes music better.
What is your least favourite thing about the SA music scene?
I am a fan of other artists who may not be that popular, but are certainly immensely talented. However, I don't get to see or hear enough of them. So my least favourite thing is that not everyone gets a fair chance.
If you could meet any famous musician who would it be and why?
I'd like to meet Bruno Mars, Cee Lo Green, Andrea Martin and Kandi Burruss. I love their song writing and they make hits for themselves and other artists.
How is 2015 looking for you? Any exciting events or performances taking place?
2015 is the year of reinvention for me. Taking on new challenges like a dress line and producing TV shows. Almost all my performances are exciting because it's another opportunity to share what I do.
Who, in your opinion, are the hottest acts on the local circuit at the moment?
Right now it looks like it's hip hop's time to shine, so I think Cassper Nyovest. He’s done a great job.
What is your advice for up and coming SA musicians?
Don't give up, learn about this industry and know how it works. Create a fan base, start this at home.
