Set in the city of gold, The Mayor is a comedy series that plays on political satire about a flamboyant mayor of Jozi who is trying to secure a third term in office while running a demanding polygamous family. OJ Mabunda has to keep a growing family together while trying to cope with running Africa’s richest and largest fictional city, Jozi. With the help of Mercia, his longtime confidant and spokesperson, as well as the newly appointed chief of staff, Martin Shai, OJ Mabunda has to ensure that he makes it to a third term despite certain elements that don’t want him to be the Mayor, like his city manager, Lucinda Le Roux. The Mayor’s ambitious plans for the city to cement his legacy cause conflict in the office, and could lead to an abrupt end to OJ’s power.
The home-grown comedy is produced by Gonga 7, known for its comedic content.
The Mayor’s comedic slant will incorporate the use of irony and sarcasm to make light of issues that are often dealt with in the real world. Imagine a city where the mayor sells off Johannesburg Zoo to the highest bidder and the public are allowed one visit per year. Well, viewers can expect the unexpected from The Mayor.
