The Mayor is centred around the life of OJ Mabunda, a flamboyant mayor that has to keep a growing polygamous family together while running the fictional city of Jozi.
Lucky Legodi, who plays the mayor, is a legendary actor and educator who rose into prominence in the nineties. Joining him is Thuli Thabethe, who plays the mayor’s right-hand lady and spokesperson, Mercia. Thabethe has done extensive work in the television industry, including hosting the first season of
Our Perfect Wedding.
Vicky Kente plays the mayor’s beloved first wife, Ntombi. Kente has acted in movies such as
Born Free: A New Adventure and
Winnie Mandela. Mabunda and Ntombi have two children, the eldest, Boy-Boy, is played by Ntobeko Mandlingozi who is known by his stage name, Ntosh. He is a stand-up comedian who has performed at major comedy events such as
The Heavyweight Comedy Jam, The Blacks Only Comedy Showcase, and
The 99% Xhosa Comedy Show.
In the other corner, there is Mabunda’s second wife, Barbara, who is played by singer, pianist, violinist and actress, Bianca Le Grange. Le Grange rose to fame after competing in the first season of South African Idols. She plays Mabunda’s young second wife who has trouble adjusting when she has to move in the main house with the first wife.
The mayor’s family and Jozi are not the only things on his plate, he has to deal with a city manager who prays to see his downfall. Fiona Ramsay plays Mabunda’s nemesis, Lucinda Le Roux. Ramsay boasts an impressive acting resume. She has acted in films such as
In My Country, The Bang Bang Club, The Three Investigators and
The Secret of Skeleton Island. Ramsay is also a theatre and film practitioner, vocal consultant as well a motivational speaker.
