“We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you for spending Mandela Day with us. We applaud your excellent work of your donation and presence,” said Thembelenkosini Care Givers programme director Khosi Ntshangase.

Jozi Cinema Club kicked off on Wednesday, 13 July with a launch screening in Soweto’s Thembelenkosini Care Givers Centre; Diepsloot’s Mother Touch Academy on Thursday, 14 July; Kliptown Youth Programme on Friday, 15 July; and Cosmo City’s multi-purpose centre on Saturday, 16 July with the last screening taking place at Johannesburg’s Yeoville Boys on Wednesday, 20 July.

“Thank you for coming through and delighting our kids with so much joy, they really loved the movie and the popcorn,” said Mother’s Touch principal Kim Turnbull.

“An exciting day it was for us, thank you so much for bringing the cinema to our community, especially for choosing our classroom, it was one real treat for children as most of them have never been in a cinema before,” said Thulani Madondo, co-founder of Kliptown Youth Programme.

Most of the kids from the centre have had an unfortunate start to life, from poverty to abandonment, but after two hours of escaping their reality, immersed in a brought-to-your-doorstep cinema experience, their faces carried elated smiles of appreciation as they ran out of the movie, gave their tiny high fives and said their final goodbyes to the HDI crew.
