Organised by the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and Universities South Africa (USAf), the awards aim to acknowledge scholars who have made contributions to the social sciences and humanities through their research.
In 2023, these academic awards aim to recognise research excellence under the 'Social Justice' theme.
Under this theme, the adjudication panel has identified innovative research projects that are centred on analysing social justice inquiry, theories and practice aimed at achieving transformative impact in communities — socially, scientifically and otherwise.
The theme is in line with the HSRC's vision that positions the council as a global centre of excellence in the human and social sciences, focusing on pressing issues facing South Africa. Such issues include:
- poverty alleviation
- reducing the inequality gap, and
- expanding decent work opportunities.
The award ceremony will feature live performances by Tumi Mogorosi and a keynote address by professor Achille Mbembe. Radio and TV personality Brenda Sisane will serve as the programme director.
Over 30 nominations have been received for 2023's awards, and the awards will be presented in four categories:
- Emerging Researcher
- Mid-career Researcher
- Established Researcher, and
- Established Researcher and Team.
The
Emerging Research category will receive a trophy and a monetary award of R30 000, while the
Mid-career Researcher category will receive a trophy and a total monetary award of R40 000.
The
Established Researcher category will receive a medal and a monetary award of R60 000, and the
Team category will receive a trophy and a total monetary award of R40 000 for the team.
