The SPAR Win-A-Car competition has been running for 20 years and has positively impacted numerous lives. In 2023, with the inclusion of a car for charity, the impact on the communities where SPAR retailers operate was even greater.

"Each year, as a token of our appreciation to our customers, we give every single one of our shoppers across the country the chance to win a car and have given away more than 1 145 cars to date. This year, we increased the number of cars given away to 60 in celebration of our 60th birthday and then added one more for donation to a cause close to our hearts," says Helen Barrett, national advertising and promotions manager for The SPAR Group.

"Charities aligned with the SPAR brand play a vital role in creating positive change within their local communities. We wanted to stay true to our culture of caring by collaborating with charities we already support through other SPAR initiatives and provide them with a platform for greater awareness," adds Barrett.

Four charities were selected as potential beneficiaries of the Special Edition Hyundai i20. For one month, the public voted for their favourite charity, with over one million votes cast for one of the following:
  • Cancervive in Johannesburg
  • Hero Burn in Pretoria
  • the national SPCA, and
  • Southern Lodestar in KwaZulu-Natal.

"The pure volume of votes counted per charity is a testament to their unwavering commitment to what they do, so we were honoured to be in a position to offer each of the four charities a cheque for R10 000 and SPAR products essential to their causes," says Barrett.

The SPCA emerged as the winner of the Special Edition Hyundai i20 car. Brent Lindeque, widely known as The Good Things Guy, was enlisted by SPAR to personally visit each charity during the SPAR Good Mileage road trip from Durban to Germiston to hand over the car.

The car was equipped with advanced safety features, including:
  • a Matrix vehicle tracking device
  • two wireless Beame recovery devices, and
  • a MiX Vision dashcam, which further enhanced its safety capabilities for the SPCA.

"At SPAR, we're committed to serving the community, bringing smiles and promoting positive change. Our Good Mileage initiative, as an extension of a platform that previously only rewarded customers, along with our visits to the four incredible charities, reflects this," says Barrett.

"Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to our customers, retailers and partners for their unending support that has enabled us to continue making a meaningful impact 60 years later," concludes Barrett.
