Every year we see the number
67 pop up during July, urging people to give
67 minutes of their life on
Mandela Day.
People all over the country take note when the day rolls around, but PRs need to do
more than just take note.
Alrika Möller from media update explains why PRs should care about Mandela Day:
What is it about?
Nelson Mandela Day celebrates the life of
hero and
legend Nelson Mandela. Mandela gave
67 years of his life to fight for
freedom and
equality in South Africa, and we are only asked to give 67 minutes in his honour.
It's a small price to pay!
Why should PRs care?
Getting involved in a
charitable organisation is a concept every good PR is familiar with. It is the
oldest form of
damage control.
Mandela Day is more than that. The day is about showing
respect to a great man and an important part of
South African history.
Every PR should
ensure that they
and all their clients celebrate this day as it lets companies exercise their
corporate social responsibility in a meaningful way. It shows your audience that you understand what it means to be
South African.
We believe that it is important to celebrate important days and moments in history through PR. What are your thoughts? Let us know in the comments section below.
