Clover Mama Afrika has hosted a four-day Sew Fancy course in November, bringing together ten "Mamas" — Nomsa Zimema from George in the Western Cape, Dawn Irons Ubombo in Kwa-Zulu Natal, Felicity Maluleke from Soweto and Rina Malan from Pretoria.
A few trainees also attend and are sent from various "Mamas'" centres across the country for practical skills development, Claudette Neveling, Itumeleng Masemola, Tshepiso Motau, Endy Nomphelo Tswelekile, Thokozile Ndlovu and Lindiwe Dube, says the programme.
Presented by sewing expert Linda Venter at Bernina in Auckland Park, the course introduces the "Mamas" to a range of creative projects, including golf club covers, 2-bottle and 4-bottle wine totes, book covers, unique aprons, tablet stands, fabric plant holders and even car rubbish baggies, among others, adds the programme.
By the end of the four days, the "Mamas" say that their enthusiasm had multiplied — not only had they mastered new skills, but they were thrilled about the potential to earn an income from their handcrafted items, with hopes of supplying personalised products to small and medium businesses, concludes the programme.
