It is the 20
th anniversary of this popular LifeLine Johannesburg fundraising event; the sponsors are Macsteel Service Centres SA (Platinum sponsor) and XGX Productions. The venue is the Linder Auditorium in Parktown, Johannesburg, and the concert begins at 20:00.
For over a century, since 1895, the BBC Proms Season has delighted London’s concert goers with a rousing classical music extravaganza of more than 70 concerts over 58 days, allowing music fans to enjoy dozens of works from some of history’s greatest composers. In past years, the Proms has showcased film scores and unknown composers – earning a much-deserved reputation as a not-to-be missed musical jamboree of distinction, containing an eclectic mix of modern pieces; classical music; and new talent.
Under the baton of Richard Cock, this year will be The Johannesburg Festival Orchestra; two choirs – the Symphony Choir of Johannesburg and the Alexandra Adult Choir; and soloists: eight of the '20 Tenors' and the exciting young soprano, Friedel Mitas.
The highlight of the BBC Proms Season is the
Last Night of the Proms, held annually at the Royal Albert Hall. According to Historian, David Cannadine, there is an atmosphere of "balloons and whistles, flags and streamers". The Johannesburg
Last Night of the Proms is no exception with high-spirited audience participation.
