SHAPE editor, Tracy Melass is encouraging as many women as possible to sign up for the run as proceeds from each event will go to charities in the respective cities, namely the Jess Foord Foundation in Durban, which supports victims of rape and abuse; Elana Meyer’s JAG Foundation in Cape Town, which is committed to making a difference to young people’s lives through community-based sporting and educational programmes; and Nanga Vhutshilo, a non-profit HIV/AIDS community-based children and youth programme situated in Soweto.
According to Melass, participants can choose to do the 5km or 10km routes and walkers are most welcome. “Whether you’re a serious runner or not, whether you sprint, jog or walk it, all that counts is that you give it your best shot and cross that finish line with pride and spirit,” says Melass.
“Running your very first 10km race can be intimidating but there is a host of information and advice on the
SHAPE magazine website, including training schedules, advice on what to eat before the race, during the race, what to wear and much more,” says Melass. “However, most of us would agree that there’s nothing better than a weekend spent outdoors exercising and the added benefit of this race is that you can enjoy your outdoor and fitness pursuits while contributing to a much bigger cause that needs our support.”
In addition to the race proceeds that will go to the various charities, spectators and participants are also encouraged to bring along specific items that have been requested by the various charities to the
SHAPE magazine stand on the day.
SHAPE magazine will collect the items on the day and ensure they are given to the charities. For a full list of what the various charities require, log onto
