Members from the Consol Bellville factory joined the finalists and learners at the school. Western Cape regional finalists, Nayha, Claudia, Kreshenke and Lara followed Ella Bella’s lead, helping the children through each step of the process and learning how to conduct their own school visits. Ella Bella is the Miss Earth South Africa Educational Officer as well as the UNEP Youth Ambassador, she stressed the importance of caring not only for the beans but for the environment at large, and each girl shared a green tip with the children.

A green quiz ended the session, in which each enthusiastic respondent was awarded one of Claudia’s delicious green cupcakes (the children were later delighted to discover that there was in fact one for each of them!). The girls have now returned to help the children re-plant their beans into soil.

As part of this leadership programme, region al finalists across the country will now embark on greening projects around the country, this project will see children nationwide taught about the importance of indigenous trees as well as a hand on planting session that will see hundreds of trees planted during National Environment Week from Monday, 4 June through to Friday, 8 June.
