The mobile mammography unit was also open, providing free mammograms to women with no medical insurance. The PinkDrive educational breast check unit was also open providing free clinical breast examinations to people in the community.
The day started with an educational breast health talk by Nonhlanhla Patsa, PinkDrive’s nurse who was interactive with all the people who attended the talk. She educated the ladies about breast cancer; importance of early detection of breast cancer and how they can also perform a breast self examination to look out for symptom of breast cancer. “It is very important that you know your breasts and be aware of any changes,” said Patsa during the educational session which was open to everyone who was in the area. The mobile breast check units were then opened where 246 free clinical breast examinations were done by PinkDrive nurses within the unit.
Nelly Ndwambi who is a breast cancer survivor for the past 16 years told her story of surviving cancer. “I didn’t know about breast cancer before … I didn’t think it would happen to me,” said Ndwambi during her motivational speech at the event. Idols third runner up performed songs and entertained the guests during their short wait to go into the mobile unit. Visitors of the unit walk away with mini gifts for the day but most importantly with knowledge about breast cancer.
PinkDrive is a Cause Marketing Fundraiser’s initiative with an aim to raise awareness and educate the public about breast cancer, spreading the message ‘Early Detection Saves Lives’. The initiative currently runs two mobile breast check units, one of them being a mobile mammography unit which operates in collaboration with public hospitals proving their services to women with no medical insurance. The PinkDrive mobile educational unit operates on rotation in 103 community clinic offering free education and clinical breast examination to people in the communities.
