Purple Plumm’s team of representatives at Fourways Mall took the meaning of birthday cake to a new level on Saturday, 13 July by constructing a cupcake mural for former President Nelson Mandela.
Over 5000 cupcakes were used to construct the largest cupcake mural in the Southern Hemisphere – a portrait of Madiba. In association with Cupcakes for Kids with Cancer - a division of Cupcakes of Hope, whose aim is to create awareness and raise funds for children with cancer – Fourways Mall constructed the mural in the Junxion Court.
Using 5226 cupcakes, all donated by members of the public, volunteers constructed the mural in just over four hours. Iced in purple and green butter crème, the cupcakes were placed in 67 rows from left to right, representing the 67 years of Nelson Mandela's public service. Once the mural had been completed, the cupcakes were sold off to Fourways Mall customers in order to raise funds for the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital Trust (NMCH), the Mall’s chosen charity for 2013.
“Nelson Mandela has touched all of our lives in one way or another and we felt inspired to honor him and his family during this difficult time,” explains Purple Plumm’s managing member, Vanessa Fourie. “The Fourways Mall team thought that honoring the children of South Africa, who hold such a special place in his heart, was a fitting tribute and we wish him a very Happy Birthday.”
