Porterville High School is one of five schools across the country that were selected to benefit from donations to the total value of R100 000 that was pledged when Basson accepted an Ice Bucket challenge from Truworths’ Michael Mark and a number of other business associates at the grand finale of the supermarket group’s popular Championship Boerewors competition in Sun City in October.
Basson challenged the learners to become entrepreneurs and double their money by selling Boerewors rolls in fundraising efforts. “We need to create jobs in South Africa which we continuously do at Shoprite, but I also believe we need to teach children how to be entrepreneurs and create more opportunities from a young age.”
Basson was delighted to return to his hometown for such a meaningful project. He was born on the family farm, Dasbosch, in the Porterville district and attended the local school during his primary school years before moving to Cape Town where he matriculated and attended university.
The principal of Porterville High School, Willem Engelbrecht, was thrilled to receive the unexpected windfall and said that they had already earmarked it for a large sports event in March next year when the school will play host to other schools from the region. Learners will use the donated Championship Boerewors to make and sell Boerewors rolls to learners and spectators attending the event.Their profits will be invested in ongoingschool projects.
The other schools that received Boerewors donations to use in fundraising efforts are Jan Kriel School (Kuils River, Western Cape); Onze Rust Primary School (Bloemfontein, Free State); Bayview Primary School (Port Elizabeth, Eastern Cape); and Orlando Secondary School (Soweto, Gauteng).
