The Collect-a-Can CAN Craze Competition will officially kick off on Monday, 1 June. In preparation for the competition, schools are encouraged to start collecting cans and designing their CANtastic structures. The entries can take any form and learners are required to use their imaginations to think ‘outside the can’ – creativity is key.
Learners’ imaginations and artistic flair annually turn unsightly and unhealthy litter that usually ends up at landfills, into an opportunity for their schools to win additional funds, while also teaching the learners about environmental conservation.
The only requirement for the entries is that the structure must be built out of 300 or more cans.
Once the piece is complete, learners must submit photographs of the structure, along with a completed entry form. Entry forms can be collected at the various Collect-a-Can branches or downloaded from their website.
The most inspired can constructions will be selected by a panel of judges. The winning structure will receive R30 000, the second place winner will bag themselves R20 000, while the third place winner will walk away with R10 000.
"This eco-friendly competition teaches learners that trash can be a valuable resource that can be re-used and transformed into beautiful artwork, and it can be recycled to reduce waste pollution," says Zimasa Velaphi, public relations and marketing manager for Collect-a-Can.
The cans used in these structures need to be collected by the participants, after which they will be recovered by Collect-a-Can and processed for recycling. This process encourages learners to be more eco-conscious and demonstrates how a bit of creativity can prolong the lifecycle of recyclable products, giving it a second life.
"The CAN Craze competition could be the beginning of great things or even take you places," says Velaphi. Joshua Behrens, whose creativity was first discovered at the age of 16-years-old when he won Collect-a-Can's annual CAN Craze Competition in 2011, has achieved great success following his win. Behrens is currently on his way to The Digital Animation & Visual Effects (DAVE) School in Orlando, after receiving the school’s first ever bursary, based on his amazing talent.
Learners are encouraged to not miss out on this CANtastic opportunity to stand a chance to win big prizes, while painting South Africa green with their creative and crazy can structures.
