Okay, let's put it into perspective — having a paid media strategy is not just about creating artwork, pasting some copy and boom, you're the cool kid.

media update's Jana van der Westhuizen is here to give you some street cred when it comes to paid media and how you can use it!

How does paid media work?

Well, basically you pay the algorithm to do the hard work for you. Paid media consists of a range of variables — from selecting your audience to creating the correct advert to promote your concept.

With the rise of Meta, paid media was made easy in the sense that you can promote cross-platform. This means that whatever you pay to promote on Facebook directly pulls through to Instagram — except a Like Ad, that one is a bugger!

So when you set up your audience and get all the specs right according to your vision, you can select what your goal is with the post. You can either boost an existing post on your timeline, or create a Like-Ad, which will not appear on your timeline, but are dark posts that appear only on the news feeds with the goal of getting more followers.
