Aperol, Italy’s best-selling aperitif liqueur is now readily available at all leading bars and bottle stores in South Africa. Originally launched by the Barbieri brothers in the city of Padua in northern Italy in 1919, the distinctive brightly coloured drink is made from a secret blend of bitter-sweet oranges, high-quality herbs and roots.
The recipe has remained unchanged from the beginning, nearly 100 years ago.
Flavoursome and refreshing, sunny and vivacious, Aperol has a unique taste, which is “deliciously Italian and totally international”. It’s also one of the lightest alcoholic drinks in the world, making it particularly popular among a younger crowd, as well as people who embrace active, healthy living and women.
In Italy, Aperol is frequently enjoyed during ‘the aperitif hour,’ when friends have pre-dinner drinks and a few snacks immediately after work. On these occasions, the Aperol Spritz is the drink of choice and the recipe is as easy as 3-2-1. Take a balloon glass or tumbler, add ice and half a slice of fresh orange. Pour in three parts dry sparkling wine (prosecco), two parts Aperol and a dash of soda.
At the 2010 and 2012 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Aperol received the highest award of double-gold medals. It’s also the official sponsor of Moto GP, the grand prix of motorcycle racing.
Packaged in a beautiful bottle of clear Italian glass, the recommended selling price is R130.
